WHO WE ARE
Welcome! I'm so glad you found your way to our website. When we say "You are welcome here" we really mean it. Really! We are a small but friendly group of people from all different kinds of backgrounds. We are immigrants from Korea, India, Uganda, Guyana, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britian, and Americans of every stripe. We are liberal and conservative and moderate, Democrat and Republican, life-long Presbyterians and former almost-every-denomination-you-can-think-of, even Jewish, or from no faith background at all. We are infants to 96 years of age. We are veterans of wars and committed pacifists. We are single adults, young couples and families, empty nesters, retired-but-still-working, and just plain retired!
We formed in the late 1970s as a Fellowship and in 1982 grew to be commissioned as a congregation under a very dynamic and innovative pastor, Rev. James Gertmenian. Our building was finished in 1986. Every piece of furniture in the sanctuary--even the organ!--is movable. And we move it. It reminds us that God is dynamic, not stagnant. Sometimes we worship looking out our wall of windows onto the small forest of trees on our property, which reminds us of God's good creation. Sometimes we worship in the round, facing one another, which reminds us of the community God calls us to be. Sometimes we worship facing the front wall, focused on the font, cross and table.
In the early 1980s we adopted "Love Grows Here" as our theme. It came to us from a hymn -- now a cherished favorite--by the same name, written by Don Bessig. And it really is true: love does grow at Valley! We hope to see you in worship some Sunday.
